Gallipoli
Gallipoli
We had a great tour guide at Gallipoli. This was a major battlefield in WWI. At points, the ANZ and Turkish forces were 25’ apart in trenches, sharing cigarettes and songs. Then when the orders came down, they’d shoot each other. It’s now a pilgrimage for many Australians and New Zealanders to come here for Anzac day- the day the ANZ forces landed on the beach.
This is where Attaturk made his mark as a leader. He then completely reshaped the country as a secular, modern society. He is still highly revered as the father of modern Turkey.
